What each view shows

A production recipe is one record that renders two ways. This is the single most useful thing to understand about Tavorly, because it is why a server and a cook can never be looking at different documents.

Front of House

What someone talking to a guest needs:

• Menu description — the guest-facing sentence
• What’s in it — the ingredients by name only
• Allergens

There is no build: no quantities, and no procedure section at all.

That is on purpose. A server needs to answer “what’s in the redfish?” accurately and fast; they do not need six ounces, and a screen carrying the full build is a screen where the answer is harder to find.

Heart of House

What someone cooking needs:

• Ingredients with quantities — 6 oz Redfish fillet
• Procedure, numbered step by step
• Control points, inside the steps
• Allergens

The same dish, both ways

For Blackened Redfish, the difference is exactly this:

Allergens appear in both, and that is not redundancy. Both people can be asked, and only one of them is holding the fish.

Control points

Where a step carries a critical control point, it renders inside that step as a bordered red panel: ⚠ CRITICAL CONTROL POINT, the requirement in words (“Cook to internal temperature”), and the number very large — 145°F.

The size is the design. This has to be readable at arm’s length, in a hot kitchen, by someone holding a pan. If a control point matters enough to record, it matters enough to be the biggest thing in the step.

Both views are always in sync

There is no separate front-of-house version to maintain. Edit the recipe, publish, and both views change together — which is the whole reason the model is worth its slight strangeness.

What decides which view a screen shows

Each recipe viewer has a Shows setting — Both, Front of House only, or Heart of House only — and where it offers both, a cook switches from the device menu. See Enrolling a recipe viewer.
