Menu access — which menus a location can open

The toggle that decides whether a location's line sees a menu at all, and the warning that tells you when it cannot.

Menu access decides which menus a location’s recipe viewers can open. It sits on the location’s own page and saves as you toggle — there is no Save button for this section.

This is a separate decision from publishing, and from enrolling a device. A menu can be live, complete and running, on a location that has a working recipe viewer, and the line will still see nothing until that location has access to that menu.

Why it is not automatic

A new location starts with access to nothing, on purpose. Auto-granting every location into every menu would be wrong for most brands:

  • a regional or seasonal menu belongs to some locations, not all
  • a new site should not inherit a menu it does not serve
  • staged rollouts depend on being able to add locations one at a time

So access is a choice you make per location. The cost of that choice is that forgetting it is silent from the menu’s side — which is what the warning below is for.

“NO LINE ACCESS”

On a menu’s page, each location shows a NO LINE ACCESS pill when it has no grant for that menu, with the plain-language version: “This store’s recipe viewers can’t open this menu, so the line sees nothing”, and a link straight to the toggle.

This exists because the menu page used to say a location was Running a menu while its line saw nothing at all. “Running” is derived from the active version and the location’s pins — it describes the menu, and says nothing about whether anyone can open it. The two statements looked like they agreed and did not.

If you see NO LINE ACCESS on a location that should be serving the menu, that is the bug it was built to catch. Follow the link and toggle access on.

Checking your work

Two places tell you the truth quickly:

  • Stores & devices lists each location’s menus in its row. A location showing — has access to nothing.
  • The location’s own page shows the toggles themselves.

And the honest end-to-end check is the line: open the recipe viewer for that location and confirm the menu is there. A menu you can see in the admin app is not evidence that a cook can see it — that is the whole reason this page exists.
